I just talked to my friend who's getting into professional photography. He explained to me what iso, shutter speed, and aperture meant.
iso = exposure
shutter speed = exposure time
aperture = gamma/brightness
That's all you needed to tell me!

He is kinda right.
ISO is the senor sensitivity, which is pretty much like exposure.
Shutter speed controls the exposure time.
Aperture is the size of the opening to the sensor. This will determine how much light will get in and will effect the gamma. The aperture is the most important thing for depth of field. Using small aperatures (large f-stops) will decrease the shutter speed and increase depth of field. The opposite is true for large apertures (small f-stops). The number of blades in the eye as well as the selected f-stop will also effect your bokeh. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh

It was my paraphrase.
To a layman all the explanations I've seen are pretty useless.
The terms are pretty important but also pretty misleading. THey refer to the technology that you use rather than how they affect the image. I guess I just don't think like that.

omggg.... I finally got around to editing the pics I took in Cambodia.... took me forever too...
check them out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/28326292@N06/?donelayout=1
Here are some that I liked more than others:
All went through HDR processing because they originals just looked terrible because the lighting was just terrible when I took most of them... lol...
and then some more touchups in Photoshop... I basically copied a style of another guy I saw on Flickr and I felt I really liked it.... if anyone wants me to go into more detail I can...
otherwise comments and criticisms are always welcomed ... too colorful?? lol...

The colors look good. The luminosity is a bit high on a few of the images, hence the glowing edges. It's hard to prevent, though. Several of my photos have it too.

Sometimes that is a plus and not a negative

I think they are great!
I'm so amazed at how flat these pictures are. Jack is an expert at getting things "straight" I guess.

lol... thanks guys...
I do try to frame my shots so that they're "straight" as you say... and then if they're not perfect I just use the rulers provided in photoshop to correct...
but definitely a lot of these pictures were horrible originally so it's not because I'm a good photographer or anything...I didn't know better and had aperture set up to max .... so like 22 or something like that... then diesel told me later on that for best sharpness it should only be around 7 or something like that... lol...
photomatix hdr processing and photoshop (contrast curve, saturation mask - blue/green (ect), unsharp mask, ect ect ) made it like 10000x better imo... although now that I look it at it I might have unsharpened it a little too much... lol...
if you don't believe how much photoshop + photomatix makes a difference, just look at the original... lol...
Anyways, now on to the beach!
Preview:
and totally random things like fayfay's cat! (and no I didn't photoshop the eyes; it really has different colors for each eye!!! boo at the noise but only pic I had of her)

Omg Jack did you ever watch the Anime movie "The Cat Returns" by Studio Ghibli? The royal cat in that movie has the same eyes!

Flat pictures are good? Digital pictures lack depth perception, unlike traditional film photography (as I'm told by veteran professional photographers). You want to avoid flat pictures by having objects in the photo to give depth.
Jack, you did a good job of that by having the rockway on the left of the temple picture and the shoreline.
Nice pics man
